Nigeria comedian, Bovi Ugboma has yet again made a controversial and unusual take on marriages. The comedian, while speaking on the Dear Ife podcast, proposed that marriages come with a renewable five-year expiration date.

Bovi explained his opinion, noting that this ultimatum keeps couples on their toes. He also claimed that it may help eliminate many of the challenges besetting marital unions.

Bovi noted that although expiry is a strong term to describe his point, he believes couples should be given the option to rethink their marital decisions every now and then.

“Expiry is a very powerful word but I think every marriage should be renewed, for example, every five years. Within the two families, (there should be a conversation like), ‘Do you still want to marry? Come and take what has been happening’, especially in Africa where we are very communal. When your spouse knows there is a review coming one year from now, he’ll adjust,” he stated.
