World Cup 2026: Messi tops list of players with most matches played

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has become the player with the most appearances in FIFA World Cup history after featuring in his country’s final Group J match against Jordan.

The 39-year-old forward made his 28th World Cup appearance when he came off the bench during Argentina’s 3-1 victory on Sunday.

Messi also found the back of the net as the reigning champions secured their place in the Round of 32.

His latest outing sees him move clear at the top of the all-time appearance rankings, surpassing every player to have competed at the tournament.

Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Germany legend Lothar Matthäus are tied in second place with 25 World Cup appearances each, while Germany’s all-time leading World Cup scorer Miroslav Klose follows with 24 matches.

Italy great Paolo Maldini completes the top five after making 23 appearances at the global showpiece.
