World Cup 2026: South Africa coach, Hugo Broos makes history after elimination from tournament

South Africa coach, Hugo Broos, on Sunday made history after his side’s elimination from the ongoing FIFA World Cup tournament.

Broos, at the age of 74 years and 79 days, became the oldest coach in knockout-phase history.

Oscar Tabarez, who had been 71 when he guided Uruguay in the 2018 quarter-finals, had held the record.

Recall that Broos watched as Canada defeated the Bafana Bafana 1-0 in the Round of 32 to qualify for the Round of 16 stage.

A late stoppage time goal from Stephen Eustaquio ensured the co-host nation defeated South Africa.

The defeat means South Africa is officially out of the World Cup tournament.
